Recently at The Deepblue Agency we have started to see the fallout that is the result of the May Google Penguin update. Websites sliding downwards into inevitable obscurity and dropping from previously high ranks. The Penguin update looked closer than ever at the link profile of websites. Any that were deemed out of the ordinary, showed a sudden surge in the appearance of backlinks or backlinks from an unrelated topic were penalised. Some horror stories have been seen in news groups because of this.
In SEO the best practice is to do everything you can to adhere to the search engines guidelines (boxing clever within those guidelines) make sure you know precisely what your SEO company is attempting. Try and find out what they are doing, why they are doing it, and whether it is a search engine approved method.
At Deepblue we have been steadily working with existing and new clients to remove these ‘dodgy’ back links and clean up any errors that the Penguin update has highlighted.
As has been noted before, if Google is your only marketing activity and you are trying to game Google, you will eventually be caught out, maybe not today or tomorrow but eventually. Google relentlessly strives to improve the search experience for users. So don’t try any blackhat SEO. Avoid link schemes and focus on doing interesting stuff instead. You’ll spend the same amount of time and effort and the rewards are much better. It’s also more fun doing things for humans than for bots. Be creative, think outside the box and come up with what would at one time have been called PR stunts. You do not have to be Richard Branson and fly a balloon round the world. But there are ways and means of getting articles and links from respected websites back to your site.
